First BRC publication in Russian Raptors Conservation journal
We are proud to announce the publication of our first Russian language paper in the Russian Raptor Research and Conservation Network’s (RRRCN) journal ‘Raptors Conservation’.
The cover of Raptors Conservation features a stunning juvenile Short-toed Eagle giving onlookers in the Batumi bottleneck a close look.
Spearheaded by Olga Zaytseva, the new publication is a follow-up to our British Birds article, providing both a translation to the Russian-speaking community as well as a review of likely breeding areas of migrants passing Batumi and a comparison between Russian breeding population estimates and numbers of migrants in Batumi.
Despite ongoing conflict in our flyway, we are proud to feature on the cover of Raptors Conservation journal. It truly is an important milestone for us in connecting with the researchers that work in the breeding areas of most of the raptors that we are monitoring every autumn in Georgia.

Tomorrow, March 1st 2022, a small team of BRC volunteers will begin the 3rd and final spring count in Sakhalvasho, Georgia. Many of the raptors we will count in Georgia over the coming months will be making their way to breeding grounds in Ukraine as well as Russia. And while the Russian regime is now attempting to occupy Ukraine, it is impossible for us not to remember the very first Batumi Raptor Count of 2008, that started shortly after Russian forces violently invaded Georgia. It was a violent conflict that left deep scars, and changed Georgian people forever.
In frustrating and difficult times such as these, counting migrating birds from atop a mountain in Georgia may seem like a very trivial thing to do. However, we believe that in many ways BRC is about people as much as it is about birds. Since the beginning of our project, we have had the privilege of hosting wonderful volunteers and students from many nations. The love for birds and nature, like birds themselves, knows no borders, and BRC tries to be a place where people from all corners of the world can marvel at the beauty of nature together, and form friendships across national and cultural borders. After all, it is by sharing the values we hold in common, such as the love for life and nature, and by sharing beautiful moments atop a mountain, that we can build warm memories together, that we can learn to grow towards each other, and that we build the foundations for a peaceful future on our vulnerable planet.
As we watch the raptors fly north this year, our thoughts will be with the people of Ukraine, and the victims of the Russo-Georgian war in 2008, but also with the many Russians that are protesting against their rogue regime, and that will be left to suffer the consequences of a war they never wanted. They all deserve better. May peace come upon Ukraine soon. And may the millions of people in Ukraine, Georgia and Russia soon be free of tyranny, so they can build a better and peaceful future.

ხვალ, 2022 წლის 1 მარტს, BRC-ის მოხალისეთა მცირე გუნდი დაიწყებს მე-3 და ბოლო საპილოტე პროექტის, გაზაფხულის სეზონის მტაცებელი გადამფრენი ფრინველების მონიტორინგს სახალვაშოში, საქართველოში. ბევრი მტაცებელი, რომელსაც საქართველოში მომავალი 3 თვის განმავლობაში დავაკვირდებით უახლოეს თვეებში გაემგზავრება უკრაინისა და რუსეთის მიმართულებით სანაშენე ადგილებზე. Ახლა, როცა რუსული რეჟიმი ცდილობს უკრაინის ოკუპაციას, შეუძლებელია არ გავიხსენოთ 2008 წლის ბათუმის მტაცებლების პირველი მონიტორინგი, რომელიც საქართველოში დაიწყო რუსული ძალების ქვეყანაში ძალადობრივი შეჭრის შემდეგ. ეს იყო ძალადობრივი კონფლიქტი რუსეთის მხრიდან, რომელმაც ღრმა ნაიარევები დატოვა და სამუდამოდ შეცვალა ქართველი ხალხი.

Წელს, მტაცებლების ჩრდიროეთით მიგრაციაზე დაკვირვებისას, ჩვენი ფიქრები იქნება მიმართული როგორც უკრაინისკენ და 2008 წლის რუსეთ-საქართველოს ომის დროს დაზარალებულებისკენ, ასევე იმ უამრავი რუსი ხალხისკენ, რომლებიც აპროტესტებენ აგრესორულ რეჟიმს და არ სურთ ის შედეგები, რასაც ეს ომი მათ მოუტანთ. ისინი, ყველანი უკეთესს იმსახურებენ.
